Library Research - The Process

The Library Research Skills guide is designed to teach you:

  • how information is organized
  • about information formats
  • where to find the information you need
  • how to evaluate information
  • how to get help

Library Research Steps

  1. Select your topic.  Write down key concepts or subject terms for your topic.

  2. Find background information: encyclopedias, reference books if necessary.

  3. Identify the information sources you need.

  4. Search for sources of your information.

  5. Evaluate the information you retrieve.  Think critically!

  6. Put it all together - i.e. write your paper or prepare your presenation.

  7. Cite your sources.
